Union (Ship) supercargo's journal, 1803.

The logbook of the ship Union is actually a diary, detailing a shipping voyage from Salem, Mass., to Europe, May-Nov. 1803. The ship's home port was Salem; the owners were Clifford Crowninshield, Ichabod Nichols, Benjamin Hodges, and Nathan Peirce; the master was George Hodges; the logbook keeper was Benjamin Hodges Jr., who may also have served as the supercargo. The logbook discusses passenger traffic aboard this cargo ship and seafaring life; includes examples of poetry and sea songs; mentions a quarantine and a shipwreck or disaster; and includes descriptions of Gibraltar, Barcelona and Tarragona, Spain, and Pisa and Livorno (Leghorn), Italy. The diary includes comments on politics, religion and social problems and issues. During its voyage, the Union spoke the schooner Frederic out of Baltimore.
